San Martin Defeats River Plate in an Intese Game

After loosing to San Lorenzo in the Argentinean Premier, River was defeated by the Peruvian San Martin on Thursday in a group three match of Copa LIbertadores 2009.

Both teams struggled up until the final whistle. The Peruvians had a tight defense, and put a large amount of attention into the Colombian Striker, Radamel Falcao Garcia. They were well aware of his ability to score with his head and his incredibly high jumps.

San Martin opened up the scoreboard in the 36th minute with Diaz after the Colombian Referee called a penalty when there was actually no foul.

In the second half, Luduena scored from a counterattack in the 56 minute, after River had started focusing in getting the ball in the opponent's net. Thirteen minutes later, "El Tigre" Falcao Garcia, scores a controversial goal with his shin after receiving a cross as a free kick.

River had many close opportunities, and the referee might have not called a penalty or two that would have indeed changed the outcome of the game.

Ramos was the player of the game, although if River would have won, Falcao would have taken the title without a doubt.

San Martin now leads the group along with Club Nacional de Futbol de Uruguay with six points, River comes in third with three, and Nacional comes in last with none. They are waiting for their next game which will decide who qualifies and who does not.
